And just plain not giving a damn about a lot of things…

  7. to tell you the truth

I am a New Yorker, born and raised, but I don’t remember 9.11 well. I was young, living in blissful ignorance. I was in the 4th grade. That day I was kinda happy that school was out for a while. I even said so in school, the principal heard me and looked at me with an anger that I couldn’t understand. As I got home, my mom was so happy to see me, something else I didn’t understand.

The next week, I learned the news. I saw the horror displayed on the televisions over and over again. I went to church on Sunday, and everyone was crying. I saw the smoke from Staten Island. There was a constant black smoke rising from Manhattan that made it look like a ghost town. I knew what happened, but I couldn’t understand. I hadn’t lost anyone close to me. This is the difference. This is what the people outside of NY don’t understand about 9.11. You could see the pain of loss and hurt everywhere around you in NY. Fortunately, a non-New Yorker just wouldn’t understand.
